Another fun scrap block

This simple 9 patch can be sliced and diced to make a totally different block and quilt look. The trick here is to have five colored and four background squares.

These started as 3 3/4″ squares sewn together with a 1/4″ seam. Cutting down the middle was just a hair over 1 1/2″.  If you cut down the center of the white blocks both up and down and also crosswise, you will have four new smaller blocks.  Now turn the blocks and set together as shown in the next picture.

Finaly, the block is squared to 9 1/2″. When set together, you will get a quilt called the Straight of Georgia (see picture below.) This technique is much easier than the original strip piecing taught for this pattern. Plus, it uses up more of those scraps that have a habit of taking over the sewing room.
